Welding gloves that fit correctly protect hands without compromising dexterity. Gloves that are too large bunch at the fingers, reducing control and creating a catch-point for moving equipment. Gloves that are too small restrict blood flow and fatigue the hand. Here’s how to size welding gloves correctly.


How to Measure Hand Size for Welding Gloves

Welding gloves are sized by hand circumference measured around the palm:

  1. Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your palm (across the knuckles, excluding the thumb)
  2. Measure in inches
  3. Match to the size chart below

Note: This is the standard guideline. Individual brands fit differently. Leather stretches with use, so some welders size down slightly for MIG/TIG gloves where fit is critical.


MIG vs. TIG vs. Stick Glove Sizing Considerations

MIG gloves: Heavier construction; fit is less critical than TIG. Size per the chart above. The Caiman 1600 series (B00IFDXSTE for medium, B00IFDXYPW for large) are a benchmark for MIG glove fit.

TIG gloves: Thin goatskin or deer skin; fit should be close. TIG welding requires fingertip feel to feed filler wire. Size down if between sizes. A loose TIG glove prevents proper filler control.

Stick (SMAW) gloves: Heavy-duty elbow-length gauntlet gloves. Fit is less critical; larger is better for pulling on over a jacket cuff. The Tillman 9215 (B003GMBPTY) and Black Stallion 21CS (B003PD6616) fit standard to large.

FR sleeve welding: Some welders use lighter gloves combined with separate welding sleeves. The Tillman 5218E (B00186VZJK) sleeve size is independent of glove size.

Leather stretching: Full-grain leather gloves (especially pigskin) will stretch 5–10% with use. For MIG gloves, buying true to size is fine. For TIG gloves, either buy true to size and break them in, or size down one.


Glove Length: Wrist vs. Gauntlet

Wrist-length gloves (MIG/TIG style): Cover to the wrist. Designed to be worn inside the jacket cuff or with the jacket cuff folded over the glove wrist. Easier to put on and take off frequently.

Short gauntlet (3–5” cuff): Cover partway up the forearm. Standard for most MIG welding gloves including Caiman 1600, Revco GM1611. The cuff catches spatter that would otherwise enter the sleeve.

Long gauntlet (elbow-length): Used for overhead stick welding and structural work. Tillman 9215 and similar. The long cuff prevents spatter from falling inside the jacket sleeve during overhead work.


Left and Right Handed Welding Gloves

Most welding gloves are symmetric (ambidextrous). However:

  • TIG gloves are sometimes sold as left-hand and right-hand (the hand holding the torch vs. the filler wire hand). This is uncommon but exists.
  • MIG gloves are essentially always symmetric.
  • When ordering: if the listing doesn’t specify hand, they’re symmetric.

How Long Should Welding Gloves Last?

Lifespan depends on usage:

  • Holes appear in the palm or fingers
  • Seams separate at high-stress points
  • Leather thins to the point of heat transmission through the glove
