Some older or variant Chicago Electric models may use a CR2430 or CR2450 coin cell instead. Always check the battery compartment label or the owner’s manual for your specific model before purchasing a replacement.

Does the Battery Need Replacing Often?

Under normal conditions, no. Chicago Electric helmets rely primarily on solar cells to power the auto-darkening filter - the battery acts as a backup. In a typical shop environment with decent lighting, the solar cells handle most of the workload, and the manufacturer advertises up to 6 years of expected battery life.


How to Replace the Battery in a Chicago Electric Welding Helmet

Tools needed: Small Phillips head screwdriver (or flathead, depending on your model)

Steps:

  1. Remove the auto-darkening filter (ADF) cartridge. On most Chicago Electric helmets, the ADF slides or clips out from the front of the helmet shell.

  2. Locate the battery compartment. Usually on the side or rear face of the ADF cartridge - a small panel held by one screw or a slide-open tray.

  3. Remove the old battery. Note the polarity orientation before removing.

  4. Insert the new CR2032. Match the polarity - typically the positive (+) side faces outward.

  5. Reassemble the cartridge and reinstall in the helmet shell.

  6. Test the helmet. Take it into bright sunlight or hold a flashlight near the sensors. The lens should darken. Cover the solar panels - if the lens functions properly, the replacement was successful.


How to Replace the Lens on a Chicago Electric Welding Helmet

Chicago Electric helmets use a two-lens system:

  1. The outer cover lens - a clear protective polycarbonate lens that protects the ADF from spatter, scratches, and debris. Replace this most often.

  2. The ADF cartridge (inner lens) - the actual auto-darkening filter. Replace only when the ADF itself fails.

Replacing the Outer Cover Lens

The outer cover lens is a consumable - replace it when visibility starts to degrade.

Compatible cover lenses: Available from Harbor Freight and third-party suppliers on Amazon. The 46092 uses a lens approximately 4.5” x 3.5” (verify with your model’s manual).

Steps:

  1. Open the front of the helmet to access the lens frame.
  2. Remove the retaining frame that holds the cover lens.
  3. Slide out the old lens.
  4. Insert the new cover lens.
  5. Reinstall the retaining frame.

Cost: Replacement cover lenses typically run $5–$15 for a 5-pack from third-party sources.

Replacing the ADF Cartridge

Important: Harbor Freight does not always stock replacement cartridges for discontinued models. If your model is no longer active, it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire helmet.


Is the Battery the Same Across All Chicago Electric Models?
