The Miller Elite is the predecessor to the Digital Elite - a helmet that earned a loyal following in shops across the country for its reliable arc detection, solid build quality, and straightforward operation. If you are still running a Miller Elite and want to keep it performing, the service parts are readily available and largely overlap with what the newer digital series uses. This guide covers the battery, lenses, and other wear items for the Elite series.

The Battery: Same as the Digital Series

The Miller Elite uses CR2450 3V lithium coin-cell batteries, part number 217043 - the same battery used in the Digital Elite, Digital Infinity, and Digital Performance. Two CR2450 batteries are required. Replace both at the same time when performance starts to drop.

This part compatibility is useful if you run mixed Miller helmets in your shop. You can stock a single battery part (217043) and service all non-Classic, non-Pro-Hobby Miller helmets from the same supply.

Signs the Elite battery needs replacement:

  • Lens is slow to darken or does not darken at all
  • Display shows no activity when the helmet is pressed to wake it

Accessing the Battery Compartment

The Elite battery compartment is in the ADF cartridge. Accessing it requires removing the front lens holder, the outer cover lens, and then the ADF cartridge from the helmet shell. The battery tray is on the back of the ADF cartridge, accessed with a coin to rotate the tray cover.

The process is the same as the Digital Elite:

  1. Release and remove the front lens holder (press-release tabs on the shell)
  2. Remove the outer cover lens (216326)
  3. Unclip and slide the ADF cartridge forward out of the shell
  4. Locate battery tray on ADF back panel, rotate cover counterclockwise with a coin
  5. Remove both old CR2450s, install two fresh 217043 batteries (positive side forward)
  6. Replace tray cover, reinstall cartridge, cover lens, and lens holder
  7. Power on and confirm display operation

Cover Lenses: Same as the Digital Elite

The Miller Elite uses the same cover lens part numbers as the Digital Elite - a direct cross-compatibility win.

Outer cover lens - part 216326 Sold in a 5-pack. The 216326 is explicitly listed as fitting “Elite, Digital Elite, and Titanium series.” If you also own a Digital Elite, you are sourcing one part for both helmets.

Inner cover lens - part 216327 The inside protection lens. Also shared with the Digital Elite series.

This compatibility is the main reason many experienced welders keep running their Elite helmets even after the Digital Elite became available - consumable parts are identical, easy to source, and cheap.

Other Wear Parts

Headgear - part 770246 The 770246 ratchet headgear assembly fits the Elite, Digital Elite, Performance, Titanium, XLix, and Pro-Hobby series. Same part across the lineup.

Sweatband - part 297112 Standalone fabric sweatband. Replace this before replacing the full headgear assembly when the sweatband is the only worn component.

Hard hat adapter - part 259637 For site environments requiring both hard hat and welding helmet. Same adapter fits the Elite as it does the Digital series.

Cheater (magnifying) lenses 1.5x (212237), 2.0x (212239), 2.25x (212241) - all compatible with the Elite shell.

Elite vs. Digital Elite: What You Actually Lose by Staying on the Elite

Since parts are so compatible, it is worth understanding what specific features the Digital Elite added over the Elite, so you can make an informed decision about whether an upgrade makes sense:

X-Mode is the biggest functional difference. The Elite uses optical arc sensing only. The Digital Elite added electromagnetic X-Mode detection, which is more reliable for outdoor welding and low-amperage TIG in poor lighting. If you frequently weld outdoors or in bright ambient light and your Elite occasionally fails to darken, X-Mode is the reason to consider upgrading.

Shade range: The Elite’s shade range goes from 9 to 13. The Digital Elite added shade 8 capability, which matters for low-amperage TIG work at under 20 amps where a shade 9 minimum is slightly too dark.

Digital display: The Elite uses a simpler analog-style indicator for some settings. The Digital Elite has a full LCD readout of shade, mode, sensitivity, and delay - easier to verify settings at a glance.

For standard MIG and stick welding in a shop environment, the Elite handles the work without compromise. The limitations appear at the edges: outdoor welding, very low-amperage TIG, and the nuisance of settings verification without a display.
