Optrel e684 and Vegaview 2.5 Battery Guide

The Optrel e684 and Vegaview 2.5 are both members of the Optrel Expert Series - the generation before the Crystal 2.0 and Sphere X CLT. Both helmets share the same battery format, the same cover lens, and the same ADF maintenance logic. If you own either one, this guide covers everything you need.

Battery: Two CR2032 Cells

Both the e684 and the Vegaview 2.5 run on two CR2032 3V lithium button cells. This is confirmed in the e684 instruction manual and the Vegaview 2.5 documentation: “The cartridge has replaceable Lithium button cell batteries, type CR2032.”

The batteries are located inside the ADF cartridge under the battery cover. To access them, carefully remove the battery cover as described in the manual. Remove both old cells, install fresh CR2032 cells with correct polarity, and replace the cover.

The green LED diagnostic: Replace the batteries when the LED on the cartridge flashes green. This is the explicit instruction from the official manual: “The batteries must be replaced when the LED on the cartridge flashes in green.” Do not continue welding with a flashing green LED.

Battery life: Approximately 3,000 hours of operation. The efficient design of the Expert Series ADF extends battery life well beyond what many competing helmets achieve at the same price class.

A note on the replacement ADF cartridge: Canada Welding Supply notes that replacement e684 ADF cartridges (sold as a service replacement) do not have user-replaceable batteries - they are powered by solar cells and an internal non-replaceable source. This applies to the replacement cartridge, not the original helmet ADF. The original e684 and Vegaview 2.5 helmet ADFs use user-replaceable CR2032 cells as documented in their manuals.

Cover Lens: Part 5000.212

Both the e684 and the Vegaview 2.5 use the 5000.212 front cover lens - the same lens used by the Crystal 2.0 and Sphere X CLT. This lens crossover is confirmed by weld-ready.com: “If you have an older expert series helmet such as the Vegaview 2.5 or the e684, everything in this collection will work with it as well.”

The 5000.212 is a 5-pack of scratch-resistant clear polycarbonate outer lenses with 99.9% UV protection. Available at cyberweld.com, weld-ready.com, and optrel.us.

The 5000.210 2-pack is also compatible with e684 and Vegaview 2.5, and listed on optrel.us as fitting e600 series helmets.

Replace the outer lens whenever it shows scratching, pitting, or discoloration. A clean outer lens directly affects arc sensor performance.

The e684 and Vegaview 2.5: Key Differences

Both helmets share the Expert Series ADF platform but differ in one critical specification:

Vegaview 2.5: Shade 2.5 in the light state - the brightest ADF ever made at its introduction. Normal welding helmets of the era had a light state of shade 5 or darker. The Vegaview 2.5 delivered 400% more light transmission in the non-welding state, dramatically improving visibility for setup and inspection work.

e684: Shade 4 in the light state - still brighter than conventional helmets but not as bright as the Vegaview. The e684 uses shade 4/8-12 with ShadeTronic autopilot for automatic shade selection.

Both use the same CR2032 batteries and the same 5000.212 cover lens. For maintenance purposes, they are identical.

ADF Cartridge Replacement

When the original ADF electronics fail, replacement ADF cartridges for both helmets are available from rapid welding suppliers:

e3000 PAPR Compatibility

Both the e684 and the Vegaview 2.5 are designed to work with the Optrel e3000x PAPR respiratory system. The e3000x provides NIOSH-approved powered air purification for welders in environments with heavy fume exposure. A battery charger (e3000/X Battery Charger) is available separately from Optrel distributors for the PAPR system.

Spare Parts Availability

As older helmets in the Expert Series lineup, the e684 and Vegaview 2.5 are approaching the stage where parts availability may narrow. The cover lens (5000.212) is a current crossover part that fits the Crystal 2.0 and Sphere X CLT, so availability is expected to remain strong as long as those current helmets are sold.
