How to Build a DIY Welding Cart

Steel source: Local steel supplier, metals recycler, or OnlineMetals.com (common among DIY builders). Old bed frames are a commonly used free source of angle iron.

Hardware

  • 4 swivel casters - 4” or 5” diameter, 2 locking. Rated for the combined weight of the welder + cylinder (~200–400 lbs for typical MIG setup). Buy casters rated for at least 2x the expected load.
  • Welding wire and consumables - for the project itself

Do I Need a Welder to Build a Welding Cart?

  2. Build with bolted construction - angle iron cart frames can be built with 1/4” bolts through the iron flanges instead of welding. Not as elegant but functional.

Step-by-Step Build Process

1. Design

2. Cut all pieces

  • Use an angle grinder with a 4.5” cut-off wheel or a metal chop saw
  • Mark all pieces with a soapstone marker
  • Cut mitered corners at 45° for the frame rectangles (cleaner than butt joints)

3. Square the frame

  • Use a flat welding table or flat concrete floor
  • Use welding magnets (Hobart B0017YYHDE) to hold corners at 90°
  • Tack weld only all joints first before full welding - this allows correction if squareness is off

4. Check square and weld out

  • Measure diagonals - equal diagonals = square frame
  • Full weld all joints
  • Allow to cool before moving

5. Add shelves

  • Cut expanded metal to fit shelf openings
  • Weld or bolt to shelf supports

6. Mount casters

  • Drill 4 holes per caster mount through the bottom frame corners
  • Bolt through with 5/16” or 3/8” bolts + locking nuts

7. Add cylinder holder

  • Weld a chain hook or V-bracket to the rear upright
  • Chain should wrap around cylinder at shoulder height

8. Grind, prime, paint

  • Grind any rough welds and sharp corners with a flap disc
  • Apply Rust-Oleum Rusty Metal Primer
  • Topcoat in shop color of choice
